Yes, this is so important. It’s the system of whiteness as elaborated over a period of 500 years or so worldwide which has caused the problems.
I do think the difficulty comes in separating this from individuals who continue to exhibit psychological behaviors supporting white supremacy. The dismantlement of WS will require acknowledging that white-male-cis-Christian is a constructed model whose only intrinsic value is to economically and culturally privilege one very small group of people at the expense of everybody else. In particular, African-Americans are affected due to the required binary which must place ‘black’ in diametrical opposition to the ‘superior’ white; without black, there is no white power.
The fact that many white people cling to this construct as a favorable one indicates the degree to which true morals are not being negotiated honestly, or for that matter, at all. There is no value in supporting patriarchal white supremacy, or the dominance of heterosexuality, or the superiority of being of some sort of Christian faith. This isn’t about that individual white person per se, but about how the construct serves to privilege some at the expense of others. BUT, a white person aware of this should then, as an individual, be expected to react appropriately. All too often, the appropriate behaviors, which would involve a reorganization of money and leadership/power positions, doesn’t follow the lip service.
Any psychological belief that supports the intrinsic superiority of any of these four aspects ultimately supports white supremacy.
