Thank you for this piece, which I just discovered. The residue of white women supremacy still exists in certain manifestations. The fact that white women voted for Trump at a rate of 54% illustrates that they are invested not only in their whiteness but in the preservation of the white-male-cis-Christian four-legged constructed stool; it benefits them regardless of the misogyny.
Here are other examples, some of which indicate that liberal white females are also invested in holding up the current system:
Bryn Mawr College: name of M. Carey Thomas, a white supremacist female, on the library. When a request was made to remove it, given her efforts to maintain a purely white population at BMC in the early 20th century, there was opposition to this from a number of white females as recently as 2017. These are women who consider themselves liberal and open-minded: graduates of BMC.
The fact that most affirmative action positions have gone to white females — thus minimizing the impact to African-Americans of all types, who along with Native Americans/Indigenous carry the bulk of institutionalized disadvantage. Thus, despite the fact that white females already enjoy an advantage due to their whiteness, an unearned advantage that NO POC WILL EVER have. AffAction meant to benefit POC has primarily benefited white women. (???How was this allowed to happen???)
The fact that certain large corporations, historically dominated by white males, are now dominated by white females (such as publishing.) Curiously, though white females were vigorous about opposing the white male foot on their necks, many of them have been much less forthcoming towards POC when they find their feet, as in the case of publishing, on the necks of POC.
These are only a few examples.
Generally speaking, white women behave — whether consciously or subconsciously — as if they are ‘next in line’ for benefits, as if once the white man allows entry into his group, the assumption is made that it will be white women. White men seem to agree, allowing them in while continuing to largely exclude POC. That white women, subject to their own discrimination, refuse to see this, is the shocking current reality which should be exposed, the residue of the historical facts.
White women are both historically and currently obligated to examine their roles in maintaining white supremacy. At some point, requesting equal treatment from white men while simultaneously keeping white female feet on the necks of POC is going to expose itself as outright hypocrisy.
